Can Flowers Really Improve your Mood

Your Mental Health and the Impact of Flowers

I spend my day surrounded by beautiful blooms, but that doesn't make me immune to stress. So I became curious about why flowers are so often linked to boosting our mood and wellbeing.

So… is it true?

According to science yes, it actually is! Studies have shown that when we see or smell flowers, our brains release feel-good chemicals like dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine is associated with pleasure and reward, while serotonin is known as the "happy hormone," promoting calmness and emotional well-being.

Having flowers around can help reduce stress and anxiety, and even ease symptoms of depression. Some studies also suggest that being around natural elements like flowers can lower your blood pressure and heart rate.
(Note to self: remember that next time I get my wholesaler invoice!)

Will flowers at home really help?

Yes! and you don’t need a full garden display to feel the benefits. Just having a small bunch of blooms on your kitchen table or workspace can brighten your environment and lift your mood.

Research also suggests that flowers in your workspace can enhance creativity and productivity, which is surely the perfect excuse to treat yourself (or gently hint to your boss that flowers are a worthwhile investment in team wellbeing!).

Flowers and self-care

We hear so much about self-care these days - and rightly so. You can't pour from an empty cup, and taking time to look after yourself really matters.

Adding flowers to your self-care routine doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. If you're growing flowers in your garden, snip a few stems and pop them in a vase. At the supermarket? Throw one of those little cheerful bunches into your trolley. Or go one better and sign up for my Friday Flower Club  - a lovely way to treat yourself weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or just now and again.

So, do I believe the hype?

Absolutely.

Since taking over from my dad and starting deliveries from my home studio, one of the best parts of my week is seeing people’s reactions when they open the door and receive flowers, especially the wee older ladies (their smiles are everything!). That look of pure joy? That’s proof enough for me that flowers do lift the spirit.
